Pope Leo XIV was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois. He is of mixed heritage, including French, Italian, Spanish, and Louisiana Creole descent. He attended Villanova University, where he earned a degree in mathematics in 1977, and later studied at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, receiving a Master of Divinity in 1982. He also pursued canon law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, earning his doctorate in 1987.

Before becoming pope, Prevost served as a missionary in Peru during the 1980s and 1990s, where he held various roles, including parish pastor and diocesan official.
