Saint Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort was born in Brittany, France, on 31 January 1673. He was ordained in 1700 and distinguished himself by his zeal and missionary work. He preached so forcefully and effectively against the errors of Jansenism that he was expelled from several dioceses in France. He took his case to Rome, where Pope Clement XI conferred on him the title of Missionary Apostolic, enabling him to continue his apostolate.

An ardent devotee of Our Lady, he preached Mary everywhere. He was one of the greatest apostles of the Rosary in his day and continues to be so through his inspiring books,
