Traditionally the votive glass  is used to hold pure olive oil that feeds a floating wick to be lit. Lighting a lamp is essential in Orthodox Christian traditions as it reminds us of Christ illuminating our souls. Following ancient practices, the olive oil is extracted using a time-honored, labor-intensive method representing devotion and sacrifice.

To use floating wicks, fill a heat-resistant container with water, add a layer of oil, and place the floating wick on the oil surface. The wick should be inserted into the provided float, with the silver side (or foil side) facing up. Light the exposed wick and enjoy the floating flame. 

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
  1. Prepare the Container: Choose a heat-resistant, preferably clear, glass container. Fill it about three-quarters full with water. 
  2. Add Oil: Pour a thin layer of Olive oil on top of the water. 
  3. Assemble the Wick: Insert the wick through the hole in the float, ensuring the silver (or foil) side is facing up. 
  4. Place the Wick: Gently place the assembled wick onto the surface of the oil. 
  5. Light the Wick: Use a lighter or match to ignite the exposed wick. 
  6. Enjoy the Flame: The flame will appear to float on the surface of the water, supported by the oil layer. 
  7. Safety Precautions: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Ensure wicks are securely anchored to their floats to prevent them from falling into the water. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets. A votive glass has a unique role in offering prayers at home and inside the Church
