The Pontifical Mission Societies are the official missionary arm of the Catholic Church, established by the Holy Father to support the Church’s mission of evangelisation throughout the world.
Present in over 120 countries, the Pontifical Mission Societies operate through National Offices that coordinate prayer, awareness, and material support for missionary work, especially in areas where the Church is young, poor, or persecuted.
In each country the Pontifical Mission Societies are overseen by a National Director whose role is to foster a missionary spirit within the local Church and strengthen its connection to the universal Church. In South Africa, Botswana, and eSwatini the national director is Fr Jeremiah Browne.
Through the four societies – the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Society of St Peter the Apostle, the Society of Missionary Childhood Society, and the Society of Missionary Union – the National Office promotes missionary formation, coordinates World Mission Sunday and other initiatives, and provides direct assistance to dioceses in South Africa, Botswana and eSwatini.
Together, we are called to be missionary disciples – sharing the Gospel not only by our words, but by our prayers, actions, and witness. The Pontifical Mission Societies exist to help every Catholic take part in this vital mission of the Church.
