Traditionally the votive glass is used to hold pure olive oil that feeds a floating wick to be lit. Lighting a lamp is essential in Orthodox Christian traditions as it reminds us of Christ illuminating our souls. Following ancient practices, the olive oil is extracted using a time-honored, labor-intensive method representing devotion and sacrifice.
- Prepare the Container: Choose a heat-resistant, preferably clear, glass container. Fill it about three-quarters full with water.
- Add Oil: Pour a thin layer of Olive oil on top of the water.
- Assemble the Wick: Insert the wick through the hole in the float, ensuring the silver (or foil) side is facing up.
- Place the Wick: Gently place the assembled wick onto the surface of the oil.
- Light the Wick: Use a lighter or match to ignite the exposed wick.
- Enjoy the Flame: The flame will appear to float on the surface of the water, supported by the oil layer.
- Safety Precautions: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Ensure wicks are securely anchored to their floats to prevent them from falling into the water. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets. A votive glass has a unique role in offering prayers at home and inside the Church
